Hey gang, I have not been here for a while and that is a shame, the truth is that I have been extremely busy with work and just not had the time to be following the Chiefs like I would like. However, as usual draft time gets everyone fired up and I am no exception.
So the 2010 draft is nearly half way over and the Chiefs have been busy. We all know about the pick for Eric Berry at number 5 overall. I honestly did not think that Pioli would go this route, expecially when Okung was on the board. I guess it was an option too good to pass up and I was wrong in my earlier predictions that I made that he would never pick a safety that high. Never say never. I am happy with the pick, I mean how can you go wrong with any of the first three round picks when you need as many things as we need on this team? I got that answered in the second round.
We picked McCluster in the second round. I am stunned, I just did not see that coming from anywhere. This guy is small, even smaller than Darren Sproles, at 5'8" and 165 pounds. The guy just doesn't have the size to be effective anywhere except in the return game. Everyone brags about how fast he is, but with 40 times at the combine he ran a 4.53? That is QB speed. Maybe a 230 pound bruiser running back runs that speed, but a small guy like this is not going to make it. He also has a knock for ball protection, it seems he fumbles a lot I hope he was injured or something that day. We already have a small running back in Charles and Charles is bigger than this guy. They also talk about using him as a WR, well a 5'9" you're going to have to hope that he can out manuever the defenders, because he is not going to outreach them. The best we can hope for here is that he ends up being as tough as Sproles and that the kid muscles up in the coming years.
So even if we got Sproles to return kicks, then we go out with the 2a pick and get what? Another kick returning cornerback. I am seeing a trend here. Could it be that we were hurting for kick returners for so long that we have to go make up for it by getting two? But guess what, we got another 5'9" player. This guy is a little heavier though and can play defensiveback something we need more than a running back in my never to be humble opinion. Not a terrible pick here, probably a better selection than McCluster.
Then we get to our Offensive lineman. I like the selection of lineman in the 3rd round, and this guy may turn out to be the kind of guy we need to step into Water's shoes when he retires. This kid is about average for a lineman, but apparently everyone says he is very smart and physical, exactly what you want for an offensive guard. I think this was an outstanding pick.
I am less than happy with the pick up of Moeaki. He is not a very good tight end, he is injury prone and I doubt that he will see a lot of playtime. This is another throw away pick for us, I would have rather seen a linebacker picked up at this point, Rennie Curran might have been a good choice since we seem to think small guys are the cat's meow!
Anyway, so far I am not that pleased with the Chief's overall draft. You cannot give a great grade for the number 5 pick when you pick a player like Berry, that is an obvious choice to everyone except myself and Al Davis I guess. But when you get into the lower rounds, I am just not happy with what I have seen. Out of those five players, only four of them have any real shot at making this team and I expect only three of them to actually make it. If I were grading the picks this season, I have to give Pioli and Haley a C+

The Berry pick is the pickup our 3rd line of defense needed. He is a game changer, but without a good pass rush he`s useless. One can only cover so long. Grade A. 2a) this pick also left me saying 'why" Dante Hall was just average at wr. What will make this pick any better? He has average speed, good hands. I guess we`ll see. Grade C. 2b) We needed a returner in the worst way,LIKE WE NEED LINEBACKERS. Also our nickelbacks weren`t that good last year, LIKE OUR LINEBACKERS. We`ll see. Grade C-. 3) Like Berry this was our next smartest pick. We need olineman. I can only hope he pushes Waters to the bench where he belongs or is traded. Waters hasn`t been that great since Roaf left. Grade B+ 5a) This TE cant stay on the field long enough to find out if he is any good. Wasted pick. Grade D 5b) I guess he can give Haili a rest everyonce in awhile. Grade D Pioli must think we dont need help at NT or ILB or Romeo can get something out of these people no one has before. I hope so or Pioli is thinking on trading for some. I really cant much excitment going for this year draft when we needed a real good draft bad. Hopefully i`m wrong.

I am not unhappy with our draft picks. I would have rather had Okung with our fist pick, but thought that Berry, too, is a solid pick, and I believe that we have made some strides on the O-line with off-season acquisitions.
