Yeah, I just wish we could get other interested persons involved in the discussion. I've never ever watched Lost so I really can't contribute.
What's the basic, in a nut shell, story line?
Oh boy...
That may be the most difficult question I've ever been asked.
But I'll give it a go... here's the best way I can try to describe it:
In September of 2004, Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 left Syndey Australia bound for LA. After losing radio contact, and flying about a thousand miles off course, the plane crashed on an unknown island in the South Pacific. The plane broke apart mid-air. Only about 48 people from the front half of the plane survived. Slowly, the survivors learn to cope and help each other regroup. Very quicly they find that the island is perhaps not what it seems to be. There are strange happenings; many people see objects and loved ones "haunting" the island. Something massive is ripping trees from the ground and tearing people limb from limb. And there is a large, locked, metallic hatch buried in the ground that may or may not hold the key to the survivors purpose on the island. These strange happenings and the possible threat that they are not alone on the island lead our survivors to look into the future with terror and uncertainty as they ask themselves, "Guys... where are we?"
Each episode is a personal struggle, and usually centers around one of the survivors. The structure is unique in that as we see a given character dealilng with life on the island we often get glimpses of their pre-crash life in flashbacks. Every episode reveals more and more about who these survivors
were and who they hope to become here on the island. After all, everyone has a new start on the island. They can be anyone they want without worrying about their past mistakes.
Many of the survivors share odd conections to each other, most of which are unknown by the characters at first, but seen by the audience. There are themes of fate vs free will and science vs faith. There's love and revenge. There's murder and birth. There's terror and joy. There's even golf and football!
The characters drive the show but there is also a rich mythology. It's excellently written and brilliantly acted. Very little "filler". It's a series in the
strictest sense of the word. Each episode builds on the one that came before. It's a tangled web for sure, but it's magical, mythical, heroic, evil, dangerous, exciting, romantic, and groundbreaking. I've never seen anything like it.
IMHO LOST is the best show ever on television.
So.... there you go.

It's a lot (to say the least). But I hope that helps give you some idea. It's addictive and brilliant. It's a mystery. A drama. An epic, character driven quest into the unknown externally and
internally. And I've never seen anything like it.
