Hey gang,
I made some bold statements recently about Haley, and in particular giving him another chance. I said that Haley needed to bring in some help. That help needs to be in the form of a good offensive and defensive coordinator.
What does that mean for the Chiefs anyway, what does a coordinator do? Well this article will focus on what an Offensive Coordinator typically does. I am sure the duties an OC carries out vary from team to team and I have no idea what Weis' new duties will be, however, here is what I could find about the subject.
Look at it this way, the head coach cannot be everywhere on the field during practices or during the game. He needs assistants out there to watch for the details while he focuses on the bigger picture. Look at in the analogy of the military.
The players are the enlisted men, the men that fight and die for you. The Positions coaches are the lower officers, these men are in charge of the minute details, for instance, teaching a player how to cut properly, teaching an offensive lineman to get low against a defender, that sort of thing. The Coordinators are the middle management, these are the guys that build the plan and look at the details of one of the three main areas of focus. Offense, Defense and sometimes special teams, Then finally the head coach is the general, he makes the plans, sets up the plays and generally controls the battlefield.
When looking at an offensive coordinator, the research I have come across tells me that a coordinator will help look at the his area of focus, will look at the strengths and weaknesses of his players. He will work with the position coaches to identify what the players on the field can do, then he will work that into the game plan with the head coach. On game day, he will sit up in the booth and watch what the defenses are doing and make adjustments according to what he sees.
This aspect of watching what the defenses are doing against us, is one of the things that I think we lost this season with the Chiefs and with Haley playing both head coach and OC. When you are trying to substitute players, argue calls, read the defenses, call the plays and coach the players on their mistakes, there are just too many things to do.
This is why I am glad we got Weis. I am not positive that Haley is the right head coach, but having a smart coach behind him to help him can only make things better, and frankly, Weis has the resume to make it happen.
With the Jets, Weis won the AFC East as Offensive Coordinator for the Jets posting the 4th best offense in the league that year, he served many years under Parcells and that cannot be bad experience. He is well respected around the league and is a smart guy. He then when to the Patriots and won three Super Bowl victories as Offensive Coordinator.
Some people have criticized him when he went to Notre Dame for not being a good coach there, he racked up some wins there, but he really was not the greatest head coach. I believe that led to him finally being fired.
Now he comes to the Chiefs and back to the role where he has shown so much success in the past. Word has it that he and Haley are old friends and the offense Haley wants to run is the same one that Weis ran at Notre Dame.
This has to be good news for the Chiefs, here we have a guy who knows how to build an offense and win with it. He knows management having worked for Pioli before, and he knows Haley.
I am still not convinced on Haley, but if Haley can bring in the right smart people with him, then perhaps they can help him avoid some of the mistakes we have seen him commit this season.
GO CHIEFS!!!
