WOW, if three months ago you told me that the Chiefs would be 2 and 0 I would have been surprised, but not overly surprised.
The San Diego win was unexpected and very welcomed, the Cleveland win, well let's face it guys, that was a game we SHOULD have won. Cleveland is a lot like the Chiefs in that they too are in a rebuilding mode. Watching the game on Sunday I found myself pleased with the win, but somehow the victory was not as sweet as the one against San Diego.
We have to be pleased with a win, any time you can eek out a win on the road, you have to take it, however, the Chiefs offense that showed up did not look as good as they did last year. You remember that one, the one that put up 34 points? 16 points is not enough to get excited about our chances. Additionally, if you take away a couple of calls that went our way, well frankly, we lose that game.
Consider the fumble recovery. Every replay showed that the ground called that fumble. It was one of those judgement calls, but it could have easily gone to Cleveland. That play ended up with three points for the Chiefs, the difference in the game.
Also consider the 4th and 1 play that barely resulted in a first down. That call too could have gone either way, the spot was a good one for the Chiefs, giving them a first down and letting them run out the clock, but had that spot been three inches less, Cleveland may very well have been able to pull out that win.
Of course this is the way football is always going to be, but as the officiating in Detroit showed us in the first week, a team cannot place the game into the hands of the officials and expect to come out on top. The offense on this team needs to pick it up and get themselves together. They need to be averaging 24 points per game to help keep our offense off the field.
Until next week.
